West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee is likely to join party leader Abhishek Banerjee at the TMC's ongoing mass outreach programme in Malda district on Thursday, a senior leader said.
Banerjee may leave for Malda later on Wednesday.
"Mamata Banerjee will be present at tomorrow's programme in Malda, along with national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Her programme is tentatively scheduled from 4 PM onwards," a communication from the TMC media cell said.
Abhishek Banerjee on April 25 commenced the party's two-month-long outreach programme ‘Trinamool-e Nabajowar’ (new wave in Trinamool) in Cooch Behar district in the northern part of the state ahead of the panchayat polls.
In the two-month-long campaign, the party will seek feedback from people through a secret ballot system on their preferred candidates for the panchayat election. The TMC will then nominate them.
"For the last few days, Abhishek Banerjee has been addressing rallies. Mamata Banerjee, for the first time, will address it. She may again attend such rallies once it reaches the southern part of the state," a TMC leader said.
Abhishek Banerjee so far has covered districts of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur.
Dogged by corruption charges, the TMC has launched this "cleansing" drive in the form of a massive mass outreach campaign to rebuild its image ahead of the panchayat polls this year and Lok Sabha polls next year.
