As preparations are in full swing for the G20 summit in New Delhi from September 9, US President Joe Biden left for India on Thursday to participate in the historic summit which will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This will be Biden's maiden trip to India as the President of United States with a range of issues including Ukraine, critical and emerging technology and some of the deals that were earlier announced like that of the drones with General Atomics and jet engines with General Electric, on his agenda.

"I’m headed to the G20 – the premier forum for international economic cooperation – focused on making progress on Americans' priorities, delivering for developing nations, and showing our commitment to the G20 as a forum that can deliver," the President said in a statement on 'X', formerly Twitter.

Modi-Biden bilateral meeting

According to the White House, Biden would arrive in New Delhi today evening and is expected to have a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi today itself. During the meeting, the two leaders are likely to review the progress made on the decisions that they took during Prime Minister Modi's official state visit to Washington in June.

Prominent issues on their agenda include the Russia-Ukraine war and its influence on the G20, nuclear, energy and other deals that the two countries agreed upon earlier. Ahead of Biden's departure, White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communication John Kirby told reporters that Biden's focus will be on delivering economic opportunity for developing countries, making progress on key priorities for the American people such as climate and technology, and showing the US' commitment to the G20 itself as a viable, if not vital, forum to tackle these issues.

PM Modi is also likely to hold separate bilateral meetings on Friday with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Jugnauth.
