In a historic display of unity, floor leaders of major political parties in the Parliament building are set to convene at 9:30 am tomorrow, July 31st, to receive a briefing from a delegation of MPs who recently visited the strife-torn state of Manipur. The delegation, comprised of twenty-one Opposition MPs belonging to the coalition known as INDIA (Inclusive National Democratic Initiative Alliance), embarked on a two-day visit to the region that has been grappling with severe ethnic violence since May 3rd, according to ANI.
During their visit to Manipur, the MPs took a comprehensive approach in understanding the dire situation on the ground. On the first day of their visit, they personally visited relief camps and met with the victims who have endured the monthlong violence between the Meitei and tribal communities. The humanitarian crisis has tragically resulted in over 150 fatalities and the displacement of several thousands. The violence has targeted not only human lives but also crucial infrastructures like houses, government buildings, religious places, and political establishments.
Upon their return, the delegation met with Manipur's Governor, Anusuiya Uikey, at Raj Bhavan in Imphal, where they submitted a memorandum outlining their observations and recommendations. The memorandum strongly indicted both the state and central governments, accusing the "state machinery" of failing to adequately address the escalating crisis. Furthermore, it highlighted the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation, prompting concerns and criticism from the delegation.
