The body of a 55-year-old woman, chopped into pieces, was found dumped in different parts of a house in Lalbaug area of Mumbai, police said on Wednesday. Her daughter, 23, has been arrested for the crime.
Rimple Prakash Jain, the daughter, was found sitting inside the room where she stored her mother Veena Jain’s body parts when police knocked on her door on Tuesday night.
Police told PTI that while some parts of the highly-decomposed body were found wrapped in a plastic bag kept inside the cupboard of her tenement, other parts were found dumped in a water tank.
According to reports, the woman was murdered in the month of December following which both her arms and legs were chopped off. Police recovered sickles, a cutter and a small knife from the woman’s house and suspect those to be the murder weapon.
They came to know about the incident from a relative who went to the house but found the door locked from the inside. The relative grew suspicious due to the foul smell and informed the police.
A postmortem report is awaited and an investigation is on to find out the motive behind the crime, an official said. A case under section 302 of the IPC and the Arms Act has been registered against her.
The incident is a chilling reminder of the horrific Shraddha Walkar murder case in Delhi, where her boyfriend and live-in partner Aaftab Poonawala murdered her in a similar fashion and kept her body parts in the fridge for days before spreading it across the national capital.
