One person was charred to death in a massive fire that broke out at a restaurant in Kamathipura area of Maharashtra's Mumbai on Thursday. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that the lever-4 fire broke out at the restaurant in Kamathipura, Grant Road, at 2 am.

A total of 16 fire engines and two lines from a high-rise building were in operation to douse the flames, due to which a nearby mall and a high-rise building were also vacated.

One unknown male person's charred body was found in the bathroom at said premises, BMC said, adding that enquiry about any other injured or missing person was in progress.

In another incident, a 45-year-old woman was killed after a fire erupted in the basement of a six-storey commercial building in Mumbai’s Santacruz area on Thursday. The blaze was doused at 8:45 pm, about an hour after it was covered from all sides, fire brigade officials said later in the evening.

Quoting witnesses, a civic official said two women were trapped in the building, Dheeraj Heritage, on SV Road near Milan Subway in the western suburb when the fire broke out around 5 pm. Initially, officials had said that no one was injured and that the building was a five-storey structure. Later, they said it has six floors.

According to an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), one woman was rescued from the building and rushed to the civic-run Cooper Hospital. "The woman, identified as Tara Chiman Waghela, was declared dead on arrival by doctors there," he said.
