Residents of a housing society in Maharashtra's Thane district raised objections over a family allegedly bringing two goats in their house ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, or Bakrid. The police reportedly registered a case on Wednesday against 11 people under different sections of IPC for bringing goats, that were allegedly meant for sacrifice on Bakrid inside the society.
Following the incident at Vinay Nagar Society at JP North on Mira Road, police reached the society when members came outside on Tuesday to protest. Police officers held discussions with the residents and tried to pacify them, a Station House Officer (SHO) at Mira Road police station told news agency PTI.
A video of the incident went viral on social media platforms in which some people were seen shouting and preventing the man from taking the goat to his house.
The police official said the man informs the police every year in advance about the procedure of bringing a goat to his house ahead of Bakrid as he has no other place to keep it.
"The man takes the goat away the next day and the animal is not slaughtered at his residence," the official said. The man has now been told to take the animal out of his house in the presence of police, he said. No formal complaint has been received in this connection and no offence registered, the official said.
Residents In Mumbai Housing Society
One of the residents, speaking to the media, said, “We are just saying that all societies have decided to not allow goats inside the building. Despite that, they went against everyone, didn't seek permission from the police or the society and broke the bylaws to bring the goat inside the building. We request to take the goat away and defuse the matter right away.”
Another resident said, “Mohsin is the only one who brought the goat. There are other Muslims living in this society, they understand it. They have been given a designated space for keeping goats. They still want to be stubborn and say ‘we will bring goats here, do whatever you want’, that is wrong. We just want everyone to adhere to the rules of the society.”
Meanwhile, fact-checker and founder of Altnews, Mohammed Zubair said that the man brought the animals to keep them at his flat till bakrid, and not to sacrifice them. "All the residents would sacrifice the animals in a designated (permanent/temporary) Slaughter houses. Not in Flats or inside the society. Residents of JP Infra Housing Societies ( Elara, Estella & Atria ) wanted a designated space to keep the goats/sheeps (NOT TO SACRIFICE) for two three days before Bakrid."
"They were provides space by the builder for past two years. When both JP infra and the Society denied them space to keep the goats, A few took their animals to their residence to keep the Animals inside their flats till Eid ( NOT TO SACRIFICE)," he also said in a tweet.
