Kuki People's Alliance (KPA), a member of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has withdrawn support from the N Biren Singh-led Government of Manipur.

In the 60-member Manipur assembly, KPA has two MLAs.

The withdrawal of support will not have any bearing on the stability of Singh's government as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 37 MLAs, according to website of the Manipur assembly.

KPA President Tongmang Haokip wrote to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey that "after careful consideration of the current conflagration", supporting the Singh-led BJP government is not possible for the party, according to a copy of letter shared by media organisations.

Manipur has been in the grips of ethnic violence since May 3 when violence erupted between the state's Meitei and tribal communities. The Kukis are a tribal community and the ongoing monthlong violence has led to a trust deficit between tribals and non-tribals. Over 150 people have been killed, around 60,000 have been displaced, and houses, places of worship, and public buildings have been attacked.
