Former sarpanch of Hiware Bazar village in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district and Padma Shri recipient Dr Popatrao Pawar on Wednesday said human life depends on the existence of rivers and if we ignore the issue of pollution of these water bodies, we will have to suffer the consequences.

He was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the 'Chala Januya Nadila' (Let's understand a river) campaign as part of Manjara Jal Sanvad Yatra at Aurad Shahajani in Latur district.  The campaign which began in Beed district had entered Latur district last week and will proceed to Karnataka.

"Human life is dependent on the river. If we ignore the river pollution issue, we will have to suffer its consequences. Therefore, it is the need of the time that everyone comes together and tries to prevent the pollution. It is the responsibility of citizens to prevent excessive use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture and waste water released into river," he said.

"...Moreover, it is also necessary to step forward  to protect the environment. Biodiversity has been threatened due to human intervention and thus the balance of nature is getting disturbed. These changes will affect agriculture. In view of this, people need to come forward for tree plantation, which will help in  water conservation," Pawar added.
