There should be a parity among all universities in terms of curriculum and academic calendars so that students and parents can be assured of a uniform pedagogy and quality education, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.

The state’s academic fraternity must work to transform Assam into an educational hub not only in the North East or in the East but across India, the chief minister said at the inaugural session of the two-day Conclave on the implementation of National Education Policy, 2020 here.

''I don't want Assam to be an educational hub just for the North East. I want our state to become a centre for education for Eastern India and the entire country. For this, we need 50 per cent of our universities to come in the top rank'', Sarma said.

He also stressed on maintaining uniformity in the academic calendar, syllabus, and grading pattern by the universities in the state.

The state government has taken steps for speedy implementation of the NEP 2020 and has already fulfilled over 95 per cent of its requirements, he said.

''Assam is one of the leading states in the thorough and quality implementation of the NEP 2020'', he added.

The Vice-Chancellors of the state universities have been taking committed steps for its implementation and the state government will provide all necessary support for its infrastructural improvement, Sarma said.

Views from parents and students would also be sought for proper implementation of the education policy and urged the universities to publish booklets to help students understand the PG and UG courses under NEP 2020.

The chief minister said there was a need for more discussion in the educational sphere on NEP 2020 and to make students and parents fully aware of its various provisions.

He also thanked Governor Gulab Chand Kataria for taking the initiative for this conclave and said this would provide an appropriate platform for the representatives of universities and leading colleges in the state to discuss in detail all issues related to NEP 2020 for its effective implementation.

The chief minister also felicitated the academicians of various universities of the country who were present at the conclave as resource persons.

Governor Gulab Chand Kataria was also present at the inaugural session of the conclave, organized by Raj Bhavan in association with the Department of Higher Education and General Administration Department of the state government.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu and advisor to the Education Department Nani Gopal Mahanta along with senior officials, vice chancellors of various universities and principals of autonomous colleges of several states were also present at the inaugural session of the Conclave.
