Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann has been given Z-Plus security cover. The 49-year-old Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader will be secured by the VIP protection squad of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), official sources told PTI.

The top-category security cover, apart from the Punjab Police protection, will secure the chief minister's house and immediate family members too, they said.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recently accorded the sanction for this, the sources said. It will be provided to Mann all across India.

The development comes in the wake of apparent "threats" of Khalistani activities by supporters of radical preacher Amritpal Singh.

What is Z-Plus security and who gets it?

Z-Plus security cover is given to the most prominent personalities in India. It includes a 55-person entourage, usually consisting of 10 NSG commandos, while the rest is from civil police. All commandos are fully trained in unarmed combat and martial arts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, billionaire businessman Mukesh Ambani and his family are among others who have Z-Plus security cover.
