Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, currently on a European tour starting with Belgium, highlighted concerns in the European Union over what he described as a "full-scale assault" on India's democratic institutions. He expressed agreement with the government's stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and noted the importance of India hosting the G20 Summit. Gandhi also voiced his disappointment over the absence of an invitation to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, suggesting it reflected a disregard for a significant portion of India's population.
During his European visit, Gandhi engaged in productive discussions with parliamentarians and members of the diaspora, emphasizing the challenges India faces, both domestically and globally. He pointed out the various communities, including minorities, Dalits, tribals, and lower castes, facing adversity, asserting that there is a concerted effort to alter the fabric of the country.
Addressing concerns raised by European Parliament members, Gandhi touched on issues like the situation in Manipur, emphasizing the need to uphold democratic rights and promote harmony among people. He affirmed India's right to establish relationships with other nations, while also reiterating the Opposition's alignment with the government's position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, PTI reported.
Regarding Kashmir, Gandhi emphasized its integral status within India and asserted that interference is unwarranted. He underscored the Opposition's commitment to valuing the voices of all segments of society, particularly those affected by the climate crisis.
On India-China relations, Gandhi criticized what he termed the "coercive" tactics of the Chinese, contrasting them with India's aspiration to achieve economic and political freedom within a democratic framework.
Continuing his tour, Gandhi is set to visit Paris, the Netherlands, and Norway, where he will engage with parliamentarians and participate in events organized by the Indian Overseas Congress and local diaspora groups.
