Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will contest from Amethi in the Lok Sabha elections next year, Ajay Rai, recently appointed Congress chief in Uttar Pradesh said. He further said that if Priyanka Gandhi wishes to fight election from Varanasi or any other place, every worker of the party would work to make her win.
In 2019, Rahul Gandhi contested from both Amethi and Wayanad. Union Minister Smriti Irani defeated the Congress leader in Amethi, and Rahul Gandhi was elected to the Lok Sabha from Wayanad. The Congress leader's membership to the parliament was recently reinstated after the Supreme Court ordered a stay on his conviction in the 'Modi' surname' defamation case.
Rahul Gandhi had been contesting from Amethi since 2004, after his mother Sonia Gandhi vacated the seat. Ajay Rai also said that if Priyanka Gandhi wishes to contest from Varanasi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, then the party would strive to help her win. In 2019 elections, Congress fielded Rai from Varanasi against Modi. In 2014 too, Rai lost the seat to Modi.
Few days earlier, Priyanka Gandhi's husband, Robert Vadra, claimed that she deserves to be in the Parliament. "She (Priyanka should be in Lok Sabha for sure. She has all the qualifications for it. She would be very good in Parliament and she deserves to be there. I hope that the Congress party accepts and plans better for her," Robert Vadra had said while speaking to news agency PTI.
