Famed musician Ustad Rashi Khan passed away in West Bengal’s Kolkata on Tuesday sending shockwaves across the nation.
Khan was 55-years-old. He died of prostrate cancer for which he had been undergoing treatment in Kolkata hospital, PTI reported.
The announcement about music maestro Khan’s death was made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Khan was awarded the Padma Bhusan in 2022.
Khan's demise condoled:
President of India Droupadi Murmu condoled the demise of Khan, saying he has left behind a “rich legacy” in classical music.
“Saddened to know about the passing of the eminent Hindustani classical music vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan. A Padma Bhushan awardee, Ustad Rashid Khan showcased immense versatility by exploring fusion and performing jugalbandis. He leaves behind a rich legacy in the field of classical music. I extend my deep condolences to his loved ones and admirers,” she said.
Banerjee termed Khan's demise as "great loss for the entire country".
“This is a great loss for the entire country and the entire music fraternity. I am in a lot of pain as I still can’t believe that Rashid Khan is no more,” Banerjee said.
BJP's West Bengal chief Suvendu Adhikari also condoled the demise of Khan, saying his death has left "huge void" in "Hindustani music".
"I am deeply saddened to learn that Padma Bhushan Ustad Rashid Khan has left for his heavenly abode. The sad and untimely demise of the Music Maestro would create a huge void in the sphere of Music especially Hindustani Classical Music. I offer my sincere condolences to his family members, colleagues & peers and innumerous fans & admirers. May his soul rest in peace," he said.
