Six militants were killed on Friday in an encounter with police forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
According to police sources, Azad Ahmad Malik alias Dada, an accused in journalist Shujaat Bukhari's murder, was among the six militants shot dead.
"In one of the most successful operations this year, six Lashkar militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Wagahama area of Bijbehara in Anantnag district," a police spokesman said.
Lt. Gen. A.K. Bhatt, the Commander of the 15th corps, termed the killing of six militants, including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Azad Malik as a "surgical operation".
Talking to the media in north Kashmir's Baramulla town, Bhatt said the operation was very prompt and precise.
He said the operation was successful as the forces did not suffer any harm.
The corps commander said whoever will resort to the gun will be eliminated.
"There are more militants in south Kashmir than in north. The militants are terrorising the people of Kashmir," he said.
The six militants have been identified as Azad Ahmad Malik alias Dada Malik, Anees Shafi Bhat, Basit Ahmad Mir, Atif Nazar, Firdaus Ahmad and Shahid Ahmad.
The operation was launched Thursday night on a hideout in foothills of Waghama Sutkipora of Bijbeihara area in Anantnag, around 60 kms south of Srinagar.
