The truth of the Bofors bribery case keeps reappearing to haunt the guiltyand their political patrons. The UPA government has persistently attempted togive a burial to the case by either investigative go slow, collusively obtainedjudicial pronouncements, or government facilitated de-freezing of OtavioQuottorochi's London account. The nation will not forget that Quottorochi wasMrs. Sonia Gandhi's gift to India. He brokered many a deal during the Congressregime. His front company A.E. Services was primarily responsible for swingingthe Contract in favour of Bofors. The Swiss Authorities have conclusivelyestablished that Quottorochi was the beneficiary of the Bofors pay offs. Despitethis the Congress government led by Shri PV Narsimah Rao allowed him to escapeout of the country. His escape was organised to put a lid on the question as towhether the pay offs were meant only for him or whether they were held for thebenefit of his political patrons. It is the Congress government, which enabledQuottorochi to escape. It is the Congress government, which enabled thede-freezing of his account in London.
Today, it is the Congress government, which held back from the people of Indiathe information of Quottorochi's arrest in Argentina. This concealment wasintended to save the Congress from embarrassment during the State Assemblyelections. The fact that the CBI, as the Indian wing of the Interpol conspiredwith the political executive to hold back this valuable information diminishesseriously the impartiality of the CBI. The secrecy was also meant to delay theprocess of CBI complying with legal formalities to enable his extradition. AbuSalem was extradited from Portugal even though there was no extradition treatywith that country.
The BJP is of the view that the absence of such treaty is not fatal to his beingbrought back. Corruption is an offence both in Argentina and India. The CBI, andthe Ministry of External Affairs, can certainly extradite Quottrochi if ithonestly tries. His extradition and the revelation of full truth will embarrassMrs. Sonia Gandhi. The nation is waiting for an answer. Will the UPA permitthis?
