The Supreme Court rejected an application that sought for the recusal of Chief Justice of India DY Chadrachud from hearing the petitions seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriages.

A five-judge Constitution bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices SK Kaul, SR Bhat, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha has been hearing the matter since April 18. The application was moved by a man named Anson Thomas, according to a report by LiveLaw.

Terming the application as an 'aberration', Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta said, "Since he has made the submission, I officially object to this submission," according to the report.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday resumed hearings on the ongoing row seeking the legalisation of same-sex marriage. As the hearings entered its ninth day, CJI DY Chandrachud said that there is no "compulsion" to have biological children.

The Centre told the Supreme Court it has received responses from seven states on the issue of same-sex marriage and the governments of Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Assam have opposed the petitioners' contention seeking legal validation for such wedlock.
