All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Akbaruddin Owaisi was appointed the interim speaker for the first session of the third Telangana State Legislative Assembly on Friday.
According to a notice issued by the state legislature,"In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (1) of Article 180 of the Constitution of India, the Governor of Telangana hereby appoints Sri Akbar Uddin Owaisi being a Member of the Telangana Legislative Assembly to perform the duties of the Speaker of the Telangana Legislative Assembly till a Speaker is elected under Article 178 of the Constitution of India and also to be the person before whom the elected Members of the Assembly shall make and subscribe oath or affirmation as required under Article 188 of the Constitution of India."
Objecting this appointment in presence of several others who were senior to Owaisi, the Telangana BJP on Saturday boycotted the oath-taking ceremony as well while the BJP MLAs termed the decision of his appointment a 'violation of rules'.
The MLAs also wrote to Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan in this regard.
BJP opposes Owaisi's appointment as interim speaker
Citing violation of norms, the BJP MLA's urged the Governor to set aside the nomination of Akbaruddin Owaisi as interim speaker and warned of boycotting the swearing-in event.
“In this context, the TS-BJP requests you to set aside the nomination of Sri Akbaruddin Owaisi as Protem Speaker as it constitutes a violation of norms and instructs appointment of the seniormost member. The TS-BJP also requests you to instruct the officials concerned to withhold the process of election of a new full-time Speaker for the newly constituted assembly pending nomination of a seniormost member as Speaker. The TS-BJP, otherwise, will be compelled to refrain from taking oath in front of a person who is appointed against the norms,” the letter read.
