Identified as one of the four Kumbh Melas, Ujjain Simhastha is held every 12 years in the city of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. The festival finds its origin in the the ancient legend of samudra manthan or churning of the sea which tells of a battle between the Devas and Asuras for amrita, the drink of immortality. The major event of the festival is ritual bathing at the banks of the river. The holy dip is thought to cleanse a person of all sins.
