BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday urged people to vote for her party in the upcoming two-phase urban local body elections in Uttar Pradesh, saying the voters should exercise their franchise by keeping in mind their rights and constitutional obligation. The civic polls are slated for May 4 and 11, and votes will be counted on May 13.

In a tweet in Hindi, Mayawati said, "Although the opposition parties have continuously used various gimmicks for the first phase of the UP civic elections, to be held on May 4, voters should cast their votes by being honest to the ideals of Constitution."

"... for this election also, the BJP and other opposition parties have left no stone unturned in making attractive promises and hollow claims, but the voters should not be misled by them. I appeal to all to vote for BSP candidates in the interest and development of the region," she said in another tweet. Campaigning for the first phase of the polls will end Tuesday evening.
