A criminal, carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, was today illed in an encounter with police in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar.

The criminal, identified as Akber, was involved in more than 10 cases of extortion and murder, said SP Ajaypal Sharma.

The police seized two pistols, cash worth Rs one lakh and a bike from his possession, Sharma said.

Yesterday, the former gram pradhan of Gujjarpur village, Afsar, filed a complaint against Akber, who allegedly threatened to kill him if he did not pay Rs one crore.

Acting on the complaint, police traced the location of Akber and reached Jhinjhana town in Shamli district.

"The accused was asked to surrender but instead he opened fire at the police. In the subsequent exchange of fire, he was killed," Sharma said.
