A 17-year-old girl was thrown in front of a train by two men on Tuesday. This horrifying incident occurred in response to her efforts to stop them from sexually harassing her, as alleged by her family a day later.

The girl also sustained multiple fractures during the incident, which took place in Bareilly City's CB Ganj area on Tuesday. The district magistrate confirmed that one individual has been arrested in connection with the case, and four police officers have been suspended due to negligence.

What happened to the girl?

The victim's father claimed that his daughter had been subjected to harassment by a youth and his companion when she attended evening tuition classes. The girl's parents had previously filed complaints with the accused's family.

On Tuesday, the girl was discovered in a severely injured state, with her legs amputated below the knee and one hand missing, near the Khadau railway crossing. She was promptly admitted to a private hospital where she underwent surgery.

What is the police saying?

The Superintendent of Police (City), Rahul Bhati, mentioned that it remains unclear whether the student was thrown in front of the train or if her injuries resulted from another cause.

According to the police, the girl was allegedly stopped by the young men on her way home from her tuition class, and they engaged in inappropriate behaviour towards her. When she protested, they resorted to throwing her in front of the train.

Bareilly District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar reported that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken notice of the incident, and the girl's family will receive financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh. Given the gravity of her condition, she is being transferred to a higher-level medical facility, with the government covering the entire cost of her treatment.

High-ranking officials visited the girl in the hospital to inquire about her health. The hospital's director, Dr. OP Bhaskar, stated that the girl's legs had been amputated below the knee, and she had also lost one hand in the incident. Her condition is a matter of serious concern.

In response to the incident, the police station inspector in-charge, a sub-inspector, and two constables from CB Ganj have been suspended. A departmental inquiry has been initiated by Senior Superintendent of Police Chandrabhan, with further investigation into the case directed by a senior official.

The victim's father alleged that he had previously reported the matter to the police, but they had failed to visit their village to investigate.
