Four persons were killed in a landslide in Chamba in Uttarakhand's Tehri district on Monday.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel are engaged in search operation at the site.

Visuals from the site show heavy machines such as bulldozers being used to remove the debris produced in the landslide. Initially, on afternoon, the SDRF said two to three children were feared trapped and deaths were confirmed later in the evening.

Tehri Senior Superintendent of Police Navneet Singh Bhullar told PTI that the body of a 30-year-old man was pulled out of the debris in the evening. The deceased has been identified as Prakash, a local.

Beside Prakash, two women and four-month-old baby were also crushed to death at the site, reported PTI. They have been identified as Poonam Khanduri, her four-month-old son, and her sister-in-law Saraswati Devi.

Bhullar said the search is underway for another missing person, reported PTI.

Some more vehicles could also be trapped as the landslide hit a taxi stand near the Chamba police station, Bhullar said.

The PTI reported the police as saying that the landslide has blocked the New Tehri-Chamba motor road.

Meanwhile, all schools from class 1 to 12 and anganwadi kendras in Bhilangana, Chamba, Narendra Nagar and Jaunpur in Tehri district have been closed on Tuesday on the orders of the DM in view of the weather department's heavy rain alert for various parts of Uttarakhand over the next two days, reported PTI.
