Public insensitivity towards crime against women sank to a new low in Visakhapatnam on Sunday as a woman was raped on a pavement in full public view in broad daylight, but not a single person came forward to help her. In fact, many were busy making videos of the incident, and one of the videos has surfaced online.
HT report further said the incident took place on the busy road at New Railway Colony between Tadichetlapalem and the railway station around 2.30 pm. Visakhapatnam IV town police sub-inspector K Suresh told the newspaper that the woman, 43, had left her house two days ago after a family dispute.
“Apparently, she was very weak as she had no food for several hours and was sleeping on the footpath under the shadow of a tree, when Siva, in an inebriated condition assaulted her sexually,” Suresh said.
Suresh added that some of passersby were more interested in capturing the incident on their mobile phones. “After some time, an auto driver, RG Srinu, who noticed the incident, shot a short video of it and brought it to our notice.”
Activists told NDTV that the auto-rickshaw driver could have helped the woman instead of filming the assault, even though his video helped the police arrest the rapist.
