The alleged conman Sanjay Rai Sherpuria was not only brokering deals to extort by fraudulently claiming access to VVIPs, he also duped an elderly woman to acquire her prime property near the Prime Minister’s residence for just Rs 40 lakh.
The ED chargesheet has detailed all the frauds of the alleged conman Sherpuria.
Sherpuria had allegedly taken control of the Delhi Riding Club after paying its owner meagre Rs 40 lakh for the prime property, reported The Indian Express.
He had also promised the elderly woman that he would take care of her in her old age.
“After moving his family into the property in 2017, Sherpuria moved the woman out to a rented accommodation in Gurugram, and made the club his office-cum-residence where he cut deals with businessmen," the report said.
Sherpuria was arrested by the UP Special Task Force in April for fraudulently “misusing” the PM’s name for personal gains.
Sherpuria had also allegedly faked access to the PMO and Cabinet Ministers to allegedly dupe businessmen.
The report stated Sherpuria had over a dozen companies in Gujarat and Maharashtra which all incurred huge losses and had debt.
“As banks began chasing him, Sherpuria shifted his base to Delhi in 2016. He rented a flat in Gurugram,” the report mentioned.
“During this period he came to know about one old lady named Beeru Sehgal who was the owner and resident of Delhi Riding Club which was situated at a posh location in New Delhi near the residence of Honourable Prime Minister of India,” the ED prosecution complaint has said, the report mentioned.
It was Sherpuria’s driver who informed him about her and also told him that she was unable to manage the club due to her old age, the report mentioned.
“Sanjay Prakash Rai, who wished to portray himself as being close to the Prime Minister’s office and the Indian Government, realized that the club’s property at House No. 1, Near DID, Safdarjung Road, New Delhi was in close proximity to PM’s residence and if he gets hold of this property it would be much easier for him to portray himself as being close to the PM,” the ED complaint has said, the report mentioned.
To achieve this, ED has claimed, Sherpuria met Sehgal multiple times to convince her that he would run the club on behalf of her father, the report said.
He even promised to construct a house for her on the property, the report said.
In his statement to ED, Sherpuria has said, “After a lot of discussion, Beeru Sehgal agreed to my proposal and subsequently she handed over the full control of DRC in my hands in 2018-19. An oral agreement was made between me and Beeru Sehgal that I will be giving monetary support till she will be alive to meet her daily expenses,” the report said.
Later, after Sehgal agreed, Sherpuria made a payment of Rs 20 lakh from his wife Kanchan Rai’s account (in September, 2017) and another Rs 20 lakh from the account of PB Broadcast Media Ltd (earlier known as Campaign Box Pvt Ltd), a company owned by him, (in February, 2020) to Sehgal, it mentioned.
He subsequently appointed his nephew Pradeep Kumar Rai as manager of the club, the report said.
