At 99 years of age, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mother Hiraben Modi passed away UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, early on Friday.

“Hiraben Modi passed away on 30/12/2022 at 3.30 am during the treatment at U N Mehta Heart Hospital," the medical bulletin said.

“A glorious century rests at God's feet,” Modi said in a tweet recalling that when he met her on her 100th birthday, she had told him to “work with wisdom and live with purity”.

The last few days of her life, Hiraben spent at the house of her other son, Pankaj Modi in Raysan on the outskirts of Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

She was born in the Modhi-Ganch-Teli (oil presser) community in India.

She was married to Damodar Mulchand Modi, a tea seller, who died in 1984 at the age of 74.

Eventually, she became a mother of six children with Modi being her third child, who was born on September 17, 1950.

On receiving news of her demise, PM Modi reached Ahmedabad from Delhi on Wednesday afternoon and visited the hospital to meet his mother. He had remained at the hospital for more than an hour and had spoken to doctors at the hospital, a government-funded autonomous medical facility.

Hiraben, also called Hiraba, lived at Raysan village near Gandhinagar city with PM Modi's younger brother Pankaj Modi. The prime minister regularly visited Raysan and spent time with his mother during most of his Gujarat visits.
