Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday said a society can develop only when its women are empowered.
Claiming that his government was working consistently towards empowering women, Dhami said the recent passage of a legislation by the state assembly granting 30 per cent horizontal reservation to domicile women of the state in public services was a step in that direction.
Governor Gurmit Singh has already given his assent to the bill, Dhami said while addressing a programme organised by Uttarakhand BJP Mahila Morcha.
The chief minister also mentioned other women-oriented schemes being run by his government like the Mukhya Mantri Nari Sashaktikaran Yojana, Mukhya Mantri Mahalakshmi Yojana, Mukhya Mantri Vatsalya Yojana, Mukhya Mantri Anchal Amrit Yojana and Poshan Yojana.
"Women today are taking big strides in different walks of life, including education, sports and health. Their role in the struggle for creation of a separate state of Uttarakhand cannot be forgotten. The foundation stone of a developed society can be laid only by empowering women," he said.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the daughters of India are being brought forward. The quality of life led by women all over the country is being improved. Schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao have changed the society's attitude towards the girl child, he said.
The central government is also running various schemes for women like the Ujjwala Yojana.
