"If we want to prevent our society from being plunged into corruption and turmoil, we should keep women in hijab."

— Ayatollah Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran

Outlook Editor Chinki Sinha notes that such statements regarding women have been made over the years in Iran and elsewhere, including in India.

In Outlook's upcoming April 21, 2023, issue, we look at the ongoing women's movement in Iran over the country's hijab rules. The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini last year ignited women-led protests in the country in which women defied the Iranian regime by cutting their hair publicly and walking without hijabs. Several women have lost their lives in months of protests. Sinha says the issue is a "homage to those who died in Iran".

She writes, "This issue is for all the women who continue to fight for their rights over their own bodies and for equality across the world. It is a homage to those who died in Iran."
