Every night, the Doordarshan (DD) sports channel telecasts excerpts from the SydneyOlympics. That's one way to motivate youngsters to excel in sports. After the Olympics, the nation is going through a trauma. Just one bronze for a billion people jolted even themost thick-skinned.
All kinds of schemes are in the air to help India increase its medals tally. I doubt ifany of them will work. I have a practical and effective scheme. It could make India theOlympics sports champion within a decade.
All that the government must do is to spend a couple of hundred crores in publicrelations and ensure that Olympics 2008 is held in Delhi. The Olympics village and stadiacould be built in the trans-Yamuna area of east Delhi. We already have unused stadiathere. If this is done, the rest will follow. I imagine this is how newspapers wouldreport the event.
"Yesterday, the curtain was rung down on the Olympic games as India bagged its105th gold medal, bringing its total tally of medals to 350. India is a spectacular firstin this year's Olympics. Pakistan is second and Bangladesh third.
"Last night's gold was bagged by Fazool Chand as he romped home an easy winner inthe hundred metres sprint event. Fazool's timing of 11.8 seconds was the slowest winningtime in the history of the Olympics.
"The US sprint champion, Carl Owens, collapsed on the track and started vomitingafter running just 25 metres. Carl, who suffered from severe gastro-enteritis, insistedon making the attempt against the advice of his doctors.
"Chinese sprint sensation Wong Li did not run. He flew back to Beijing with therest of the Chinese team three days earlier. The Chinese contingent, housed at the riverend of the Olympics village, was down with dengue fever and could not participate.
"The Russian dark horse, Boris Runningov, managed to finish the race by cominglast. He was coughing and wheezing as doctors carried him away. They said he neededintensive care for asthma and lung infection. The Delhi air did not seem to agree withhim.
"Tomorrow, the prime minister will honour the chairman of the MunicipalCorporation of Delhi with a special medal. 'We owe the success of this Olympics to themcd,' the PM declared."
