Only then can the university become an effective vehicle for the promotion and dissemination of such ideas. The elite profile of JNU has changed largely because of reservations which I welcome and value. A large number of social groups can now be integrated in the mainstream. However, the most disturbing trend has been the rise of ABVP and allied groups. It threatens the democratic, secular spirit of the place. The Leftist groups had created a wonderful ambience in the campus. Their slogans still resonate and had conveyed a sense of spiritedness and protest. It offered hope but that anger’s gone. JNU is now a benign campus of scholars preparing for competitive exams.
