Though the roads have broadened, the traffic continues to be very unruly. Fifty years ago, our shooting locations used to be in places like Powai or the National Park and it hardly took us half an hour to travel. Today, were I to go to these suburbs, I’d spend half a day reaching there and the rest coming back. It certainly isn’t the best way to see Mumbai. Over the years, things have also changed a lot for the better. Some of the new buildings I see around here are so sleek they make you feel as though you’re abroad. It’s interesting to see buildings built during British rule nestling alongside new skyscrapers; it gives the area a flavour that’s cosmopolitan as well as elite.

(As told to Lata Khubchandani)
