Asteroid 310442 (2000 CH59), classified as a near-earth object (NEO) and discovered in 2000, will pass by us on December 26 at a distance of 4.5 million miles, which scientists consider safe. It’s close because any celestial object less than 30 million miles from earth is an NEO. The comet is hurtling at 27,500 miles an hour. That’s 18 times the top speed of an F-16 fighter jet. It is almost equal to the Shanghai Tower in size, the world’s second tallest building.
