The Roar Is Fading

It’s time India stopped compering the fantasy that its tigers and leopards are flourishing, safe, and waiting for tourists for selfies with them. They are not. The country lost 110 tigers in 2019, as many as 38 of them to poaching—their bones feeding a frenzied Chinese medicine market, their felts adorning homes of people with narcissistic personality disorders. Figures compiled by Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI), an NGO, say we lost 491 leopards too. The time is well within sight that Tiger will be the neighbour’s Shih Tzu rather than the Royal Bengal.
