- During 1601-04, the Adi Granth was compiled by Guru Arjan Dev from the teachings of the earlier gurus and 17 Hindu, Muslim and Sufi saints.
- The Granth was installed at the Golden Temple on Sept 1, 1604. This is the Kartarpuri Bir.
- The Bir came into the possession of Dhirmal, Guru Gobind Singh’s cousin, when the book was taken by Guru Har Gobind, to Kartarpur for safekeeping.
- In 1706, Guru Gobind Singh compiled the granth’s recension at Damdama Sahib and later called it Guru Granth Sahib.
