There is a demand from the Sikh mainstream that the Kartarpuri Bir, the original manuscript of the Adi Granth, should be returned to the Golden Temple. Will your family part with it?
How can anyone take it from us? It is our private property and there is no question of handing it to anyone.
Will the family permit people to have a darshan of the holy book on the 400th anniversary of its installation?
As of now there is no such plan. We display it in the courtyard of the Kartarpur fort once a year on Baisakhi day and that is all. Earlier we used to show it once a month but we cannot do this now as its condition is delicate and it might deteriorate.
It was reported sometime ago that your family is keen to come back into the Sikh mainstream and might consider returning the Bir if your family is accepted by the Sikh high priests?
No, we can never consider joining the mainstream. We are separate and are proud of our past. We have our own line of gurus and following. People keep saying this to malign us. My son, Guru Karamjit Singh, is the present custodian of the Bir after my husband Amarjit Singh died four years ago.
