 LOOKBACK: SHOWING THE WAY

BOTTOMS UP
In Pune, a slum-dweller named Wajeda Karigar stood fourth in the state SSC exams. Prasad Akkanouru waited on tables in Nagpur and topped the arts batch
in class 12. Vaibhav Chidrewar, son of a bhelpuri vendor,
scored 91.8 per cent.
BABY’S DAY OUT
In her own little way, Baby Noor, who came
all the way from
Pakistan to Bangalore
to get the two gaping holes in her heart
closed, contributed to bringing the two perpetually squabbling countries closer.

IN the year gone by, some simple, ordinary
people showed just what we can do to make
this a better country, if only we want to.
A young girl in Gujarat stood up to the
communal goons and narrated what she saw.
A young, intense-looking man in Gaya told
the truth about corruption and paid with his
life. And a bride-to-be said ‘no’ at the altar
and became a poster girl in the fight against
dowry.

Zaheera Sheikh;
Satyendra Dubey and
Nisha Sharma: the brave
