AIDS, the dreaded scourge of the late 20th century, may just have replaced the morality brigade in these times of Sexual Permissiveness. A survey conducted by the National AIDS Control Organisation for Surveillance for HIV/AIDS cases in the country from 1986 to July 1997, found 4,828 cases of full-blown AIDS amongst the respondents screened. Of these, 74.6 per cent are listed under the category "probable heterosexual promiscuous." Unfortunately, many of the Helplines set up to disseminate information on the disease find that callers still haven't woken up to the threat of the disease. "Methods to prevent pregnancies and infections, as well as pleasure enhancement techniques are what most callers want to know about. Many do know about AIDS but not much," says Kabir Singh of the Population Services International helpline. Most helplines, however, do end with a message that lets the callers know that they might be at the risk of contracting AIDS and that it is up to them to make informed choices.
