95% of the Yamuna's pollution in Delhi is caused by sewage.
About 50% of the sewage Delhi puts into the river is unauthorised—and hence untreated.
In all, 57 million people depend on the Yamuna for drinking water (Delhi alone takes an average of 600 million gallons a day for drinking).
Most polluted point: near Okhla where the Shahdara drain empties 600 million litres of sewage a day. At this point the river water has zero dissolved oxygen, and no life in it.
80% of the pollution along the Yamuna's 1,370-km course is caused by the 22-km stretch from Wazirabad to Okhla in Delhi (just 1.6% of its length).
