Australian Glenn Maxwell raced to a 40-ball century against the Netherlands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, to set the new record for the quickest ICC World Cup ton. Maxwell reached the milestone in nine fewer deliveries compared to South Africa’s Aiden Markram, whose 49-ball century against Sri Lanka at the same venue earlier in the ICC World Cup 2023 had broken Kevin O’Brien’s 12-year-old record. Maxwell, who shares a minor connection to India thanks to his Indian-origin wife, Vini Raman, helped Australia rack up a total of 399 for the loss of eight wickets in New Delhi on October 25. The Aussies’ batting order enjoyed a fine afternoon between the wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium against the Dutchmen, with David Warner also crossing the 100-run mark, albeit in 73 deliveries. Steve Smith (71) and Marnus Labuschagne (62) also contributed significantly to the big score.

Australia have suffered from mixed fortunes so far in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. After suffering successive defeats in their opening pair of games to India and South Africa, the tournament’s record champions bounced back with victories over Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and, barring a remarkable fightback from the Netherlands, look destined to make it three wins in a row.
