ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 Points Table
The grandest ICC T20 World Cup is here and for the first time in its short history, 20 teams are competing for the coveted trophy. Cricket is also moving to America for the first time as the USA hosts the tournament alongside two-time champions West Indies.
As for the format, the 20 teams have been divided into four groups with every group having five sides. The top two from these groups will go to the next round which is the Super 8 stage. In the Super 8s, the eight sides will be divided into two groups. The top two teams from the Super 8 groups will advance to the semi-finals. The winners of the two semifinals will play in the final.
The two big teams stand out in Group A and B but the other two groups are tricky. India and Pakistan are the top teams of Group A while England and Australia are the strongest contenders to advance from Group B. Group C has three Test-playing nations: New Zealand, West Indies and Afghanistan. Group D also has three Test teams: South Africa, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. One big team from each group will be eliminated in the first round only.
Group A - India, Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, USA
Group B - England, Australia, Namibia, Scotland, Oman
Group C - New Zealand, West Indies, Afghanistan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea
Group D - South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal
However, if past World Cups are any indication any team can beat anyone on their day and upsets are expected consistently throughout the tournament.
All teams in a group play each other once. Every team gets two points for a win, one point if the game produces no result and no points for a loss. In case of a tie on points, the team with a better net run rate will advance to the Super 8 stage. The same point system will apply in Super 8 as well.
