A big question that looms over Indian cricket is what will happen to the experienced duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, especially with so many youngsters knocking at the doors. (More Cricket News)
Both Rohit and Kohli went on a long hiatus from T20Is after India's semifinal exit at the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, the duo came back into the team just a series before IPL 2024 and now find themselves in the squad for the upcoming World Cup with Rohit as the captain.
With age catching up on both the star players, will India look for an overhaul ahead of the next ICC event: Champions Trophy 2025?
Former Indian wicket-keeper batter Parthiv Patel does not think the Indian management will go this way.
"For me, it is very tough to say whether India will go on for an overhaul or not," said Parthiv while praising the batting greats for continuously reinventing themselves with the needs of the game.
"We are talking about the players of the category of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and both are legends of the game. They understand their game very well and keep reinventing themselves. We saw what Rohit did in the 50-over World Cup and we saw what Virat Kohli did in the IPL. These players keep on reinventing themselves."
The wicket-keeper also gave the example of MS Dhoni to emphasize why age should not be the only factor when deciding to move on from players.
"The same goes with Dhoni. At 42 years of age, he is playing shots that he did not play when he was 30. There is a reason why they are playing for so long and doing really well," said Parthiv speaking at the launch of Legends Intercontinental T20 League in New Delhi.
The tournament which promises to bring the legends on the ground again is scheduled to take place from August 15 to 29, 2024 at Moosa Stadium in Texas, USA.
While Rohit and Virat both had exceptional World Cup 2023 campaigns, the former struggled in the IPL but the latter won the Orange Cup in the tournament.
