The winner will take on either Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner, who took the court earlier in the day. World No. 1 entered the contest as the defending champion while Sinner was eyeing a maiden Grand Slam final spot.

Medvedev, 27, is a two-time finalist here, to Djokovic in 2012 in his first Major final, then to Rafael Nadal in the next edition, entering as the US Open champion. Last year, he lost to Sebastian Korda in the third round. This is his third Australian Open semi-final. And he has won five out of seven last four matches at Major.

The third seed, who's competing as a neutral, defeated Terence Atmane, Emil Ruusuvuori, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Nuno Borges and Hubert Hurkacz en route to the last four, including two five-setters against unseeded Ruusuvuori in the second round and Hurkacz in the quarter-final. He also dropped sets against Atmane in the opener and Borges in the fourth round.

Zverev, 26, also survived some tough challenges, starting with a four-setter against Dominik Koepfer in the first round, and five-setters against Lukas Klein and Cameron Norrie in the second and fourth rounds, respectively, then the semi-final win against number 2 Carlos Alcaraz in four sets. The third round was a straightforward outing, beating Alex Michelsen with ease.

Seeded sixth at the season-opening Grand Slam, the German is competing in his sixth career Major semi-final and the second time here in Melbourne Park. In 2020, he lost to Dominic Thiem in four sets with the last two going into tie-breaks.
