Playing in his farewell Test series, veteran Australia opener David Warner continues to show his class. In the series opener against the touring Pakistan, he scored a daddy hundred to set up Australia's massive 360-run win in Perth. On Day 1 of the AUS vs PAK Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, the southpaw from Paddington became Australia’s second-highest run-scorer in international cricket. (Scorecard | Dec 26 Blog | Cricket News)
Warner, 37, has now 18515 runs in 371 international matches. He is only behind Ricky Ponting, who scored 27,368 runs in 559 (1995 to 2012) during his glittering playing career. Warner overtook Steve Waugh, another legendary Aussie cricketer and former captain. Waugh scored 18496 runs in 493 matches (1985-2004).
Regarded as one of the most destructive batters in the history of the game, David Warner made his international debut, in a T20I match against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in January 2009. During the same Proteas' tour, Warner got his maiden ODI cap in Hobart, but he had to wait for the Test bow a little longer, which happened in December 2011, against New Zealand in Brisbane.
Warner is one match shy from completing the 100-match mark in all three formats of the game. In 111 Test matches, he has scored 8689 runs with 26 centuries; 6932 runs with 22 tons in 161 ODIs; 2894 runs in 99 T20Is with a lone hundred.
On Day 1 of the second Australia vs Pakistan Test at MCG, visiting captain Shan Masood won the toss and elected to bowl first under overcast conditions, opting for a four-man pace attack. After a watchful start, an opening stand with Usman Khawaja that produced 90 runs, Warner departed at the stroke of lunch off the bowling of Agha Salman -- thick outside edge and caught by Babar Azam at first slip. He made 38 off 83 with the help of three fours.
