Fluminense, the reigning CONCACAF Copa Libertadores champions, registered a hard-fought victory over Egyptian giants Al Ahly FC in the first semi-final of the FIFA Club World Cup 2023 on Monday (18 December). Jhon Arias and John Kennedy scored in the second half to give the Brazilian outfit a 2-0 win at The Jewel in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Arias scored from the spot in the 71st minute after former Real Madrid defender Marcelo earned a penalty inside the box. Kennedy, introduced late in the game, sealed the win with an 89th-minute strike from a counterattack. Rio de Janeiro's oldest club take on the winners of the second semi-final between Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds and Manchester City of England on Friday. Ahead of the Fluminense vs Al Ahly semi-final match, the FIFA Council met and took key decisions regarding the 2025 edition of the tournament, including the renaming of the competition. To be known as 'Mundial de Clubes', the tournament will feature 32 clubs from each of the six confederations. In addition to the revised Club World Cup, FIFA also announced the Intercontinental Cup, which will be played annually from 2024.
