The Goa police have arrested three persons for allegedly betting on the India vs Afghanistan match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Thursday. According to reports, the illegal activity was going on at a bungalow in the Porvorim area on the outskirts of the state capital Panaji. The police on Wednesday arrested the three persons, all hailing from Karnataka. (Match Report | Scorecard | Full Coverage)

“The accused were arrested under provisions of the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act,” a senior police official told PTI. Mobile phones, a laptop, a Wi-Fi router and other items worth Rs 1 lakh have been recovered from the accused persons, who are in the age group of 32 to 46 years.

India won the ODI World Cup match against Afghanistan in New Delhi on Wednesday by eight wickets. Afghanistan batted first after winning the toss and lost three early wickets in the game. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai played sensible cricket and made crucial runs to post a fighting total of 272 runs.

India started the chase with Captain Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan. They played attacking cricket from the start and put pressure on the Afghan bowlers. Rohit Sharma smashed the fastest fifty for India in World Cups and also broke Chris Gayle's record of the most sixes in International Cricket. Virat Kohli also scored a run-a-ball fifty and helped India register a comfortable win of 8 wickets against Afghanistan.

Now India's next match is against arch-rivals Pakistan in Ahmedabad on Saturday (October 14).
