The 15th edition of the ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup is underway in South Africa on Friday with Ireland bowling first in the designated opener in Bloemfontein. But the coin was being tossed at the same time in Potchefstroom, where West Indies also opted to field first against the hosts. In the buildup to the U-19 World Cup, South Africa played two warm-up matches, but both were washed out. West Indies beat New Zealand by six wickets in Dobsonville before their second game against Nepal was washed out. Captain Stephan Pascal, at the toss, exuded confidence that his side features "a balanced bowling attack" and is looking for some "intensity".
