Travis Head's sensational 137 and Marnus Labuschagne's unbeaten 58 gave Australia their sixth World Cup title as they defeated Rohit Sharma's Team India by six wickets in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final in Ahmedabad on Sunday. (Match Blog | Scorecard | Full Coverage)
Winning the toss, Pat Cummins led his marshals exceptionally as they dominated the Indian batting and rarely allowed them to score cheaply. Despite Rohit Sharma's fiery 47, Indian batters could not muster a four or six in the later stages as Aussie bowlers amped up the pressure.
In reply, Jasprit Bumrah (2/43) and Mohammed Shami (1/47) did provide the early spark but Head and Labuschagne took over proceedings as they put away the bad deliveries.
Earlier this year, Pat Cummins led the Aussies to another massive victory albeit in the World Test Championship 2023 Final against the same opposition. It was Head again back then as his 163 led Aussies to a massive 469 in the first innings at The Oval. India were bowled out for 296 and 234 in their innings as the men from Down Under won the Test by 209 runs and ended up lifting the WTC mace.
With two wins out of two in the ICC Finals, seems like Cummins has Rohit's number and seemingly so, has done the double over the Indian skipper. India's wait for an ICC trophy continues with their last triumph coming in 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
