A 146-run stand for the fifth-wicket between Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant made sure that India are in a prime position to take a good first innings lead against the West Indies.

At Day 2 Stumps, India were 308/4 after 81 overs with Rahane and Pant 75 and 85 respectively. India still trail by three runs with three days' play left in the match.

Rahane-Pant Deflates Windies

After the fall of Virat Kohli, his deputy Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant stitched a 135+ stand for the fifth wicket as India deflate Windies spirit.

At the end of 76th over, India were 297/4 with Rahane and Pant on 69 and 81 respectively. India still trail Windies by 14 runs.

Tea Break

Just before Tea, India lost captain Virat Kohli (45), trapped in front by his rival number Jason Holder off the fifth ball of the 43rd over.

Rishabh Pant joined Ajinkya Rahane in the centre. India still trailed by 138 runs.

Two Wickets In Two Overs

India lost two wickets in two overs just after the Lunch. Shaw departed after making 70 off 53 balls, falling to Jomel Warrican off the fourth ball of the 18th over. Cheteswhar Pujara departed in the next over, falling to Shannon Gabriel, caught behind by substitute Jahmar Hamilton. Pujara made 10 off 41 balls.

Skipper Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane were in the centre.

Prithvi  'Show' Continues

Prithvi Shaw scored a brilliant fifty as India raced to 80/1 in the 16 overs before the Lunch. The teenager, who became India's youngest century-maker on debut match, took just 39 balls to reach his fifty.

Giving him company was ever reticent Cheteshwar Pujara, on 5 off 23 balls.

Brief scores at Lunch

India 1st innings: 80/1 in 16 overs (Prithvi Shaw 52 batting).

West Indies 1st innings: 311 all out in 101.4 overs (Roston Chase 106, Jason Holder 52; Umesh Yadav 6/88)

Strong Start, But Poor Rahul

Then, India started their reply on a rousing note with Prithvi Shaw hitting Shannon Gabriel for 13 runs in the first over.

But out of form Lokesh Rahul (4) got out in the 9th over, bowled by Jason Holder. In 10 overs, India have posted 64 runs for the loss of one wicket with Shaw on 44 and Cheteshwar Pujara 1.

Resuming on their overnight score of 295/7, Windies could add only 16 more runs to the total even though their Day 1 hero Roston Chase completed his fourth Test hundred.

But other Windies batsmen failed against Umesh Yadav as the innings folded in 101.4 overs. He first clean bowled Devendra Bishoo (2) in the first over of the day, then removed Chase (106), another clean bowl, before dismissing last man Gabriel (0), caught behind.

His figures of 6/88 are also the best at the venue, going past Zaheer Khan's 4/69 against New Zealand in 2010.
