On a day when their male counterparts slumped to an innings defeat in Centurion, South Africa, the India women's national cricket team too suffered a six-wicket loss at the hands of Australia in Mumbai. Ellyse Perry, Phoebe Litchfield and Tahlia McGrath's batting displays were the highlight of the IND-W vs AUS-W, 1st ODI as the Aussies chased down the target of 283 runs with 21 balls to spare. Jemimah Rodrigues carried on her rich vein of form from the one-off Test into the ODI series, scoring a 77-ball 82 to power India to a competitive total of 282/8, after Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and chose to bat first at the Wankhede Stadium.

The hosts might have thought that they had enough runs on the board to make things difficult for the Australians, but Alyssa Healy and Co has other ideas. Even though the visiting side's captain was dismissed for a duck off the third ball of the innings, her opening partner Litchfield held firm from the other end and compiled a match-winning 148-run partnership with Perry.

Litchfield scored 78, while Perry ended up with 75. Beth Mooney and McGrath then got together to finish the job with ease, as the Aussies romped home to the target in 46.3 overs. McGrath scored an unbeaten 68, while Mooney was out for 42.

The second ODI of the three-match series will be played at the same venue on Saturday, December 30, 2023.
