Asian Games 2023, Day 1: Indian Rowers, Shooters Bag 5 Medals; Men's Football Team Make Pre-Quarters - As It Happened

After a glittering 2023 Asian Games opening ceremony on Saturday evening in Hangzhou, India commenced its Asian Games 2023 campaign strongly on Sunday, bagging five medals - three silver and two bronze - in rowing and shooting at the Asiad so far. The Indian women's cricket team too ensured at least a silver medal after defeating Bangladesh in the semifinals.The Indian men's football team later scraped through to the Round of 16 after Myanmar held them to a 1-1 draw. 7:12pm: Men's Table Tennis: India Lose 0-3 To South Korea In QFs
The Indian men have lost all three matches against South Korea to get knocked out in the quarterfinals. This means their team campaign ends one step short of a medal, as a victory here would have ensured a bronze.   

6:54pm: Men's Football: India 1, Myanmar 1
The stalemate stays as India draw Myanmar, which was enough to send them to the Round of 16.

6:32pm: Men's football: Myanmar Equalize
Myanmar have equalized to level things up 1-1 in the 74th minute. More tha 15 minutes still remain in regulation time.

6:22pm: Men's Football: India Holding On To Slender Lead
Team India have held on to the one-goal lead so far against Myanmar. However, 25 minutes of play still remains and the Blue Tigers will need to be on their toes to avert any danger.

Captain Cool Sunil Chhetri converts yet another penalty to put India ahead in the crucial match.

5:06pm: Fencing: Taniksha Khatri Goes Down In Quarterfinals
Indian fencer Taniksha Khatri loses to world No 2 Man Wai Vivian Kong of Hong Kong 7-15 in individual epee quarterfinal. A win in this encounter would have ensured Tankisha a medal.

5:02pm: Men's Football: India Take The Field Against Myanmar In Must-Win Game
The Indian men's football team are now in action against Myanmar in their final group game of the Asian Games. India need a win or a draw to qualify for the knockout round. Follow all the action at our live blog here.

4:59pm: Women's Rugby 7s: Japan Blank India 45-0
Defending champions Japan have hammered the Indian women's rugby 7s side 45-0 in their Pool F match, effectively ending India's chances of making it to the semi-finals. India had earlier lost 0-38 to Hong Kong.

4:52pm: Boxing: Nikhat Wins With Ease
Nikhat Zareen defeats Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Tam by a 5:0 unanimous decision to march into the next round.

Indian boxing star and two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen enters the ring for her opening round bout against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam. 

4:01pm: Women's Football - India Lose To Thailand
The Indian women's football team have lost by a narrow 0-1 margin to Thailand, thus ending their Asian Games campaign with back-to-back defeats.

The Indian women are facing Thailand and neither has scored in the first half. 0-0 at half-time.

The Indian men's team have qualified for the Quarter-final stage and will face South Korea.

12:39 pm: Cricket - Women's Semi-final - BAN Vs SL
In the other semi-final, Pakistan Women are reeling at 58 for the loss of six wickets against Sri Lanka.

11:48 am: Swimming - Women's Heat - 4x100 freestyle swimming finals
In swimming, the Indian team of Dhinidhi Desinghu, Maana Patel, Janhvi Choudhary and Shivangi Sarma finished fourth in their heat to qualify for the women's 4x100m freestyle swimming finals.

11:14 am: Esports - Men's - EA Sports Online
India's eSports campaign started off on a losing note, as Charanjot Singh lost to China's Jiacheng Liu by 0-2. Karman Singh also lost his opening game to Abdulaziz Abdullatif Faqeehi. The pair can still win a medal as they enter the loser's bracket. 

10:53 am: Table Tennis - Women's Group Event - India vs Hong Kong
Thailand have beaten India in the round-of-16 tie, 3-2.

10:29 am: Rugby - Women's Rugby 7s match - India vs Hong Kong
India's women's rugby 7s team have been thumped 38-0 by Hong Kong.

10:23: Hockey - Men's match - IND Vs UZB
This could be a procession. Indian Men's Hockey team are now 15-0 up against Uzbekistan. Talk about 'one-man show'.

10:17 am: Table Tennis - Men's - Round Of 16
Bad start for India in TT - Kirill Gerassimenko has beaten A Sharath Kamal 3-1 (11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8). In the second match, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran takes on Aidos Kezhigulov next.

10:05 am: Hockey - Men's match - IND Vs UZB
India at their dominant best. Add another five goals in the third quarter. Now lead Uzbekistan 12-0 in their Pool A match.

10:00 am: Swimming - Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay Team
Indian team finishes sixth overall in the heats and will feature in the final in the evening (6:41pm).

9:50 pm: Shooting - 10m Air Rifle Women - Final
Another medal for Ramita. After helping India win silver in the team event, she finished third in the individual event to claim the bronze. She finishes with scores of 230.1, behind Chinese pair of Huang Yuting (252.7) -- a new Games record --  and Han Jiayu (251.3). Mehuli Ghosh, the other Indian in the final, finished fourth with 208.3.

9:30 am: Hockey - Men's match - IND Vs UZB
More goals for India. It's already 7-0 at half.  Scorers so far: Varun Kumar (12'), Upadhay (7', 24'), Mandeep (28', 27', 18'), Abhishek (17') -- five of those coming in the second quarter.

Another silver for Indian rowers. They almost chased down China, but finished second by a boat lenght, with a time of 4:16.59. India's team: Neeraj, Naresh Kalwaniya, Neetish Kumar, Charanjeet Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Bheem Singh, Punit Kumar, Ashisha and captain Dhananjay Uttam Pande.

Indian women's cricket team are through to the final and are ensured a medal (Silver) as they beat Bangladesh Women by 8 wickets.

Here is the report after Indian women's team of Mehuli Ghosh, Ramita Jindal, Ashi Chouksey have won silver medal in Women's Team 10 Metre Air Rifle with a score of 1886.0.

Indian pair of Santam Singh and Parminder Singh collapsed in the final stretch. Sadly, Parminder pulled up and stopped rowing miday. Gold to China, again. India finished last in the six-team event final. Clean sweep for the host so far in rowing.

7:50 am: Cricket - Women's Semifinal - Scorecard
Pacer Pooja Vastrakar's four-wicket haul helped India dismissed Bangladesh for 51 all out in 17.5 overs in the first semi-final of 2023 Asian Games, women's cricket. For Bangladesh, skipper Nigar Sultana was the only batter to reach double figures, 12 off 17.
