An Australian cartoonist has come under heavy criticism for his caricature of Serena Williams.

In the cartoon, carried by the Melbourne-based Herald Sun on Monday, the former world number one is shown stomping on her racquet. In the background, the chair umpire is seen saying to Naomi Osaka "can't you just let her win?".

Celebrated author JK Rowling took to Twitter to share her displeasure at the alleged attempt to reduce "one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes and turning a second great sportswoman into a faceless prop."

Mark Knight, the cartoonist, is known for using provocative caricatures in Australia.

In a dramatic women's singles final of the 2018 US Open final at the Flushing Meadows, Williams was involved in a heated argument with the umpire Carlos Ramos.

An angry Williams lost the match in straight sets 2-6, 4-6 to the unheralded Japanese player. The 23-time Grand Slam champion received code violation warnings for coaching and smashing her racquet.
